About
Smashed avocado is ripe avocado crushed with lemon, salt, olive oil, chilli flakes, on toasted sourdough, often with feta and a poached egg. It became a house-price joke. It is also a decent breakfast when the fruit is actually ripe. We are not solving the housing market. We are salting the avocado properly. The fruit has to yield to a gentle press; hard avocado is a salad, not a smash. Crush with lemon or lime, salt, and a thread of olive oil, leaving some chunk. Chilli flakes, feta, and a poached egg are café extras, not a moral requirement. Toast should be sturdy enough to hold the wet mash — sourdough is common because it is what the cafés had, not because it is sacred. Eat it at once. Brown avocado is oxidation, not flavour development.

History & culture
Australian café culture of the 2010s that the world copied and then mocked. First Nations foodways are not this plate — do not pretend they are. Australian café menus of the 2010s turned a mashed-fruit toast into an export and then a punchline about rent. First Nations foodways are not this plate; do not file it under native cuisine because the fruit now grows here. Brunch culture copied the stack worldwide and then mocked it. Salt the avocado. That is the craft.
Avocado toast is older than the meme (California, etc.). Australia made it a national café export. Avocado on toast predates the meme and shows up in California and elsewhere through the twentieth century. Australia did not invent the fruit; it did standardise a lemon-chilli-feta café plate and sell it as weekend identity. Housing prices are not a recipe note. The plate is still just seasoned avocado on bread.
