About

Muah chee is a soft glutinous-rice dough, snipped with scissors into a bowl of crushed peanuts, sesame and sugar. The ASMR is real; the snack is older than the internet. This microwave or steamed version is the hawker bag at home. It should be stretchy, not glue. Mix glutinous-rice flour with water and a pinch of salt, then steam or microwave until the dough turns glossy and stretchy. Oil your scissors and snip small pieces straight into a tray of crushed roasted peanuts, toasted sesame and sugar. Toss so every cut face is coated. Eat while warm. If the dough is glue, it was overworked or too wet; if it cracks, it was undercooked. A microwave version is a hawker bag at home, not a lesser snack.

History & culture

Teochew snack that Malaysia and Singapore sell in night markets. 2026 made the coating videos global. Teochew snack culture in Malaysia and Singapore sells this in night markets and school-gate bags. Coating videos made it travel in 2020s feeds; the chew is older than the microphone. Share a bowl. It is finger food. The peanut-sugar mix is the local coat, not a chocolate drizzle.

Related to Japanese mochi and Filipino palitaw — glutinous rice plus a dry coat. The peanut-sugar mix is the local one. Glutinous-rice doughs with a dry nut-and-sugar coat sit next to Japanese mochi and Filipino palitaw without being the same sweet. The peanut-sesame sugar mix is the Malaysian-Singaporean Teochew version. Scissors as the serving tool are practical, not a gimmick invented for phones.
