Cooked Chestnut

The nut of the sweet chestnut, Castanea sativa, already peeled and cooked. Chestnuts are starchy, closer to a potato than to a walnut.

Origin

The tree is native to southern Europe and western Asia. Cooked nuts are sold vacuum-packed or in jars.

Flavour

Sweet, mealy, and mild.

How to use it

Crumble them into stuffings and desserts, or warm them in butter.

Storage

Refrigerate an opened pack and use it within a few days.
