Figs

The fruit of the fig tree, Ficus carica. What looks like a fruit is a hollow structure lined with tiny flowers, with a soft skin and a seedy pulp.

Origin

Native to western Asia and the Mediterranean, and grown in any hot dry summer.

Flavour

Honeyed and floral when ripe, and bland when underripe.

How to use it

Eat ripe figs raw, or bake and stew them. The skin is edible.

Storage

Refrigerate ripe figs and eat them quickly. They ferment and split.
