Palm Hearts

The pale inner core of certain palm trees, a cylinder of tightly packed tender leaves. Harvesting it often cuts the palm. Some species are grown so the heart can be taken without killing the plant.

Origin

A vegetable of tropical America and other palm regions, usually sold canned or jarred.

Flavour

Mild, sweet, and artichoke-like.

How to use it

Slice tinned hearts into salads and sautés. They are already cooked.

Storage

Refrigerate an opened tin in its liquid and eat it within a few days.
