Poppy Seeds

The tiny ripe seeds of the opium poppy, Papaver somniferum, used as a food. The kitchen seed has none of the narcotic latex, which is in the unripe pod.

Origin

An old crop of the Mediterranean and central Europe, also grown in Tasmania and elsewhere.

Flavour

Nutty and mild, louder once toasted or ground.

How to use it

Sprinkle them on bread, or grind them with sugar and milk for a filling.

Storage

Refrigerate. The oils in the seed turn rancid.
